TORIES CLAIM VICTORY WHEN FORCED TO RETREAT
12 November 2007
|
The Liberal Democrat Group on Buckinghamshire County Council have expressed concern and astonishment that the County’s Tory administration have now made it clear that flawed plans to possibly build an Energy from Waste (EfW) facility at Aston Clinton were only dropped by them because they were leaned on by the Ministry of Defence, not because of the concerns of local people
Months ago, the Liberal Democrats on both BCC and AVDC, along with colleagues across the border in Herts and local residents, pointed out that the College Road North site was totally unsuitable for use as a EfW site on a number of planning grounds, including BCC’s own policies.
The County Council, having apparently not done its own homework, ignored these concerns and the facts behind them and, only now, has announced that an EfW is off the agenda for Aston Clinton. This is after months of anguish and uncertainty for local people.
Having finally been obliged to rule out Aston Clinton because of MoD pressure, the Tories have disingenuously tried to make out that they have made their decision after taking on board public concerns, Council Cabinet Member Martin Tett stating in the BCC press release that:
"This shows that we listen and respond to the residents of Buckinghamshire. The whole point of the consultation was to identify key issues and concerns, and there were a number of legitimate issues raised by people across the County.”
However, in the same press release, it is admitted that Aston Clinton was dropped, not because the Tories listened to the public, but because of the MoD. The release states:
“One big difference will be the removal of Aston Clinton as a ‘preferred site’ for an Energy from Waste (incineration) facility. This is in response to a formal objection from a government department about conflicts with aviation”
BCC Liberal Democrat Steven Kennell said “The message seems clear. Valid concerns raised by the people of Bucks will be ignored by the Tories. Only when they hear from someone bigger than them will they listen. Sadly, their retreat was due to the interests of somebody other than the residents.”
