Waterside - Sleepwalking in to Disaster? asks Cllr Niknam Hussain
30 October 2007

I think the time has come to legitimately ask whether we are we danger of sleep walking in to disaster that may affect how Aylesbury town looks for a generation. A number of residents recently have commented detrimentally on the new Waterside proposals from AVDC/Warners.

All the Councils have spent thousands of tax payers money on experts, and consultants who all seem to broadly agree; so one would think, here is a golden opportunity where a new development with consultation could be built to make Aylesbury residents proud and to provide a new economic impetus to the Town Centre

Instead what do we have? Proposals that apart from the people proposing them Warners and the Conservative administration on Aylesbury Vale District Council, no-one but no-one I have met or talked to has a good word to say about. It’s not hard to see why, a well thought out cohesive scheme has been junked for something that looks like it has been taken off the shelf from the 60’s. High grey featureless walls closing in a previously open throughfare. Normally, drawings make buildings better than they usually turn out, heaven help us if the proposals look this bad on paper how bad they will actually turn out.

The affect on the residents of Highbridge Walk seems to have been summarily dismissed, as have been remnants of Aylesbury’s history like the Ship Inn. Just as importantly any notion of strategic thinking, or thinking about the cohesiveness of the Town centre have been left behind in the seemingly mad rush to develop.

Aylesbury is going change, but that doesn’t mean that change is beyond control. Remember this is council land, in effect all Council Tax payers are the developers. If this is the first example of the new, “....we are now in full control..” Conservative District Council’s proposals for developing Aylesbury, we should all be afraid, very afraid.
